So based on more experiments I believe they center-cancelled the karaoke MP3 file. When you do that it completely kills the bass and most of the drums. There is a remnant of the quack left over because the MP3 decoding is lossy and doesn't perfectly maintain the stereo image. Then they probably would have done a little shifting of sections of the instrumentation to fix timing issues, and added a new bass line (Caleb's proved they didn't use Coulton's original), and drums.Paul R. Of course it may take access to Glee's source files to discover that.

Really, what's the smoking gun to me is that banjo. JoCo is, to be fair about it, a thoroughly mediocre banjo player, which you can plainly hear when it's not hidden in the mix. Any studio musician they got would have done it better. It's also quite difficult for a decent musician to play "down" to replicate someone else's mistakes with fidelity.Dave Leighhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08617556290378317379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21054185.post-15948063451678283922013-01-27T13:21:24.705-05:002013-01-27T13:21:24.705-05:00When aired and first released on Hulu, the "J...When aired and first released on Hulu, the "Johnny C" part was ABSOLUTELY in there. It's since been rather ineptly cut out, along with the whole verse about "silicone parts are made for toys". It was 3:47. Now it's 2:00. But on the Internet your mistakes never die... it's here, at 2:17: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yww4BLjReEk

I also think we can safely stop speculating on how they might have extracted or disguised things in the karaoke release. Based on a suggestion from Caleb Hines, I did a quick Google search. Paydirt on my first try. All of the tracks are available via torrent as part of the "JoCo Looks Back" CD.

I found 12 currently active seeds. So the source tracks WERE available to Glee, and even if one or more were replaced, the most problematic of them (such as the banjo) remain for THEM to explain.I don't think they have a studio musician who can reproduce those tracks, note for note, with no performance differences.
Dave Leighhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08617556290378317379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21054185.post-86730702059800583562013-01-27T02:44:28.882-05:002013-01-27T02:44:28.882-05:00Here's my own scientific analysis. It was shortened for TV, that whole section wasn't aired (I'm not buying it so I don't know if the version they're selling says Johnny C). It seemed to match the leaked version perfectly. Maybe they did re-record the arrangement but it was definitely Coulton's version. I didn't catch any hint of a quack. As a Glee fan I'm not only offended but shocked that they would be so brazen, even after the controversy went public.

When I posted my comment it was only appearing on the Swedish iTunes and nowhere else, could've been a mistake- there was a record of all the other songs they were singing online but not BGB. It's now appearing on Canadian iTunes and I assume everywhere. I believe in innocent until proven guilty, Glee proved itself guilty and I hope Coulton sues their asses off and the public shaming goes mainstream.Mr Funnyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09556753909732513228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21054185.post-55504627553003230502013-01-24T23:23:35.060-05:002013-01-24T23:23:35.060-05:00Timothy, thanks. The reason I'm interested in this is not that it is Coulton's track per se, but that I think this is an interesting test of an artist who became famous and released everything first online. A lot more artists are doing that sort of thing. If the major corporations are just going to entirely ignore copyright, Creative Commons, or other licensing when it comes to working with the material those artists produce, that's a big deal, and it needs to change, or else the incentive to do creative in music online, outside the major label and studio system, will be effectively killed.Paul R.
